Nepal lies between the two most populous countries in the world, India and China. Its geographical location is between 26 to 30 degrees north of equator and between 80 to 88 degrees east.

Kathmandu is the capital of the country (pop. 4 million approx.), which is a valley at about 1350 meters above sea level lies. Nepal is one of the few countries without direct access to the sea. The nearest seaport is located in Kolkata (India), nearly 1050 km overland from Kathmandu.

The total area is 147,181 square kilometers with a population of about 24 million. The largest east-west extension of Nepal is almost 900 km and the largest north-south length is 190 km to 240 km. Its height from sea level ranges from only 70 m lying in the plains in south up to the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest 8848 m, to the north.
